A fair family shortlist without endless voting

Turn competing suggestions into a small, useful experiment that leaves everyone heard.

Set shared criteria first

Before collecting names, agree on practical requirements: easy pronunciation, an affectionate tone and a sound distinct from existing household names. Let everyone suggest a few candidates with a brief explanation. Keep the list visible and avoid rejecting suggestions with jokes. Shared criteria give you a way to discuss a name without turning personal preferences into a competition.

Narrow the list gently

Give each person the same number of choices and keep the three to five names with the widest support. If younger children are involved, let them help while an adult keeps responsibility for the final decision. Try candidates aloud in everyday sentences. Check spelling and a likely nickname before deciding whether the written version really suits your routine.

Choose and pause

Agree on a short trial with one leading name, then stop adding new options during that period. Notice whether everyone uses it comfortably, rather than expecting the animal to cast a deciding vote. If a clear practical problem appears, return to the shortlist once. When you settle, thank everyone for helping and use the chosen name consistently.
