Dog

Teach your dog that its name is good news

Create a gentle attention routine with clear timing, short practice and realistic expectations.

Begin somewhere quiet

Choose a low-distraction room and a moment when your dog is comfortable. Say the chosen name once in a friendly voice. When your dog looks toward you, mark that moment with a consistent word and offer a suitable reward they already enjoy. Do not make a response depend on sitting, approaching or performing several actions at once.

Keep practice easy

Repeat only a few times, then finish while the interaction is pleasant. If your dog does not turn, reduce the distraction or move a little nearer before the next attempt. Avoid increasing your volume or repeating the name continuously. Progress can vary between days; an unfinished response is a reason to simplify the situation, not to punish the dog.

Separate attention from recall

A name can mean that you have something to communicate; a separate recall cue can ask the dog to come. Practice these roles clearly with everyone in the household. Add distance and distractions gradually in secure spaces. A response to a name does not guarantee a reliable recall outdoors, so keep physical safety arrangements appropriate to the setting.
